Behavior Problems

We consider behavioral problems to be any issues that are undesirable to you or others. When it causes the animal to be harmful, destructive or have issues that interfere in the animal's ability to perform or socialize. We specialize in rescue dogs. We are aware of rescued dogs’ special needs. We will help you understand and correct their issues.

Look on the behavior problems list for any behaviors that you would like addressed in your training.

Knowing why your dog is doing something will make you more effective in altering the behavior.

Call for an Evaluation. Let's the "Why" together. Then we can come along side you and show you how you can alter or manage the behavioral problem.

“Hard Wired” or “Soft Wired”?

That is the Question.

You are probably wondering what “Hard Wired” or “Soft Wired” means. A “Hard Wired” dog means that he is born with certain tendencies that cause him to react to situations in a certain manner (i.e. herding dogs). “Soft Wired” dogs learn the behavior from their environment (i.e. jumping). “Hard Wired” behaviors can not be removed, only managed or encouraged. Although it is true you can not erase a behavior learned; “Soft Wired” behaviors can be altered or changed and maintained much easier than “Hard Wired” behaviors.

The Honeymoon — Doesn't Last

Honeymoon is the time it takes a dog to decide where he is in a pack and start exercising his rights. In some cases the dogs will take over the household. The length of the “Honeymoon” varies from dog to dog. It can be as short as 24 hours, but on the average lasts 2 weeks. What you do and don’t do during this time will set the tone for the weeks to come. The honeymoon stage is not based on age, but on the dog himself. An older dog can sometimes learn faster because he has more knowledge to draw from than a younger dog. This stage is also an extremely important time for a rescue dog.

If you are past the honeymoon stage it doesn't mean it is to late. It just means that it will take a little more time and effort.
